We’re recruiting a team of students who want to learn some sizzling podcasting skills this semester.

You’ll be part of a team of audio lovers creating an ongoing podcast series about queer and trans stories, news, and culture from Edmonton and beyond: CJSR’s GayWire.

You’ll learn how to find a distinctive style for a podcast, interview guests, edit, use music and sound, write a script, and host a show.

Roles available:

  • Podcast Producer (Application details below)
    • One internship available (with $500 honorarium)
    • 5 hours weekly commitment
    • Deadline: October 2, 2020
  • Podcast Reporter – GayWire (Sign up through Better Impact under News & Spoken Word Programming)
    • Multiple volunteer roles available
    • 2-4 hours weekly commitment
    • Deadline: October 9, 2020
  • Design Intern (Application details below)
    • One internship available (with $1000 honorarium)
    • 100 hours total commitment (November 2020 – April 2020)
    • Deadline: October 2, 2020

Podcast Producer

This internship is part of a project to create an ongoing podcast series about queer and trans stories, news, and culture from Edmonton and beyond. The intern’s main task will be conducting interviews, hosting, and helping edit the series. This work will be conducted together with a team of volunteers. This is a 5 hour commitment per week from October – December 2020.

At the end of this internship, the Podcast Producer will receive a $500 honorarium.

Ideal for someone with course work in:

  • Arts and Cultural Management
  • Arts
  • English
  • Communication and Culture
  • Radio Television and Broadcast News
  • Journalism

Some specialized skills required:

  • Educational or professional background in communications is an asset
  • Experience using audio editing software (eg Logic Pro, Hindenburg, Audacity), iTunes, Word and Google Docs
  • Prior experience volunteering with CJSR is an asset
  • Enthusiasm, curiosity, reliability, and a strong work ethic is required
  • Experience in audio recording or editing is an asset

What we will accomplish at the end of the Internship:

  • Research story and interviewee ideas for podcast episodes
  • Guide volunteer team towards common vision of podcast aesthetics and quality
  • Find guests for interviews
  • Conduct interviews
  • Select tape highlights
  • Write scripts and record hosting for episodes
  • Oversee edits conducted by volunteer team members

Design Intern

This internship is part of a project to create and launch two podcast series at CJSR – Edmonton’s listener-supported, volunteer-powered campus and community radio station. The main focus of the internship will be to develop and produce content for CJSR promotional use including print and digital designs. This position will provide diverse experience producing high-profile materials in a variety of areas. The intern will develop and strengthen skills relating to event and artistic documentation, and high-profile opportunities to publish work.

This internship will support both podcast series. The term is November 2020 – April 2021, and involves a 100 hour commitment. At the end of this internship, the Design Intern will receive a $1000 honorarium.

Ideal for someone with course work in:

  • Digital Illustration and Comic Art

Some specialized skills required:

  • Creativity
  • Graphic design and layout experience is an asset
  • Positive, enthusiastic attitude
  • Motivated, flexible, committed, and have an interest in the arts and/or the non-profit industry
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Google Sheets, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

What we will accomplish at the end of the Internship:

  • Build on existing brand identity for CJSR podcast projects
  • Produce original logos for 2 podcasts
  • Design digital ads for shows
  • Produce Facebook banners and Instagram posts for shows
  • Develop show banners for CJSR.com
  • Develop recruitment posters for CJSR volunteers
  • Other design tasks for CJSR as assigned
