We are seeking an editorial spoken word leader to join our team, who is adept at building relationships, guiding volunteers and has sharp programming skills, exceptional news judgement and an audience growth mindset.

Hours: 40 hour / week (in-person)
Salary: starting at $55,000 + benefits
Vacation: 3 weeks vacation + 1 paid week off between Christmas and New Years
Employment term: May 2026-April 2027 with possibility of extension dependent on funding

DUTIES
Editorial operations

Assign and coordinate editorial content on the most important stories of the day to support spoken word/current affairs programs across the station’s weekly schedule including interview preparation and audio-editing.

Lead story meetings for upcoming and special-event coverage.

Suggest story ideas, discuss story angles and formats with volunteers and leverage data to ensure story choices resonate with audiences.

Oversee the story development process and scheduling, in collaboration with the Program Director and Station Manager and works with volunteers and guests to refine focus, angles and structure.

Writes, vets and reviews scripts, stories and question lines and online content, ensuring adherence to CJSR and Canadian Press Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Hosts and contributes content, on-air, print and online, as needed

Integrates evolving technologies to lean into data and meet the audience where they are online, utilizing video, social media and online platforms.

Obtain and organize technical and production resources required.
Team leadership

Contributes to development of work flows and processes for news / spoken word content as well as fundraising initiatives.

Supports volunteer skill development and training in journalistic and broadcasting practices, approaches and techniques.

Works with volunteers, freelancers, columnists and other contributors to support the best delivery and performance.

Leads regular pitch meetings, manages programming calendars and outlooks. Sends weekly outlooks and assignment notes to Program Director and Station Manager and helps to troubleshoot when issues arise.

Education & experience

A university degree or college diploma in journalism, or a related industry, audio production and programming is an asset.

Experience in local current affairs is an asset.

Has at least 2 years of recent, significant leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment, particularly in roles involving breaking news and team.
