It’s 10 years for the Monday morning duo Brittany and Rylan on The History of Punk
The hour-long program examines punk of all eras from all angles, with an emphasis on punk ethos and social justice.
Classroom to radio waves
In the early 2010s, Rylan was teaching a class with the Edmonton Free School. The free, all-ages and all-welcome course offered:

film screenings

zine making workshops
Plus!
Each class included a playlist of songs related to a particular theme or issue from punk history, culture or activism.
These classes and their playlists became the foundation for the radio show.
The History of Punk launched on September 22, 2014, hosted by Rylan.
Enter Brittany
While volunteering for FunDrive 2015 during The History of Punk, Brittany had a blast with the bands on the show that day, the other volunteers taking donor calls and Rylan too.
Then they ran into each other shortly after at a local punk show, and it seemed like a great idea to start hosting the show together.
And they were right!

What 10 years means to ’em
“10 years of hosting the show together is a testament to the supportive environment of the show, the station, and the community. The History of Punk has evolved so much over these last 10 years, and it’s an opportunity to reflect back on all the voices we’ve amplified, the ideas we’ve helped disseminate, and the swear words we’ve (mostly) managed to bleep out! It’s wonderful to think about how lucky we are to get to participate in a community of people that cares so much about each other.”
The future for The History of Punk
As Joe Strummer sings “the future is unwritten” but Brittany and Rylan plan to keep making the show and reflecting punk culture.
Especially since during this year’s FunDrive, one of their pals told them, “History of Punk reminds me there’s a future for everyone”. They hope to continue to be that reminder every Monday morning when folks turn on their radio!
